Volkswagen investigates Changzhou supplier
Volkswagen has launched an inquiry into Changzhou Xingyu Automotive Lighting System after the supplier laid off over 100 new graduates a month after hiring

Volkswagen has initiated an investigation into a key Chinese automotive supplier following mass lay-offs of new graduate hires. The action by Changzhou Xingyu Automotive Lighting System, which dismissed over one hundred graduates just one month after employing them, has provoked widespread public anger across China.
Analysts suggest this incident may prompt a significant review of corporate-governance standards within Chinese companies. The controversy centres on how a major supplier to global automotive brands manages its workforce and contractual obligations.
The Lay-Off Incident
According to a report from the Beijing-based news outlet Caixin, the wave of dismissals began in early August. Changzhou Xingyu summoned a group of its recent graduate hires over a weekend. These employees had joined the company only one month prior.
The company informed them that headcount adjustments were required due to what it described as "soft business performance." It then presented the graduates with two stark choices.
Options Presented to Graduates
The first option was for the graduates to sign a voluntary exit agreement. This document would state they were leaving for "personal reasons." In return, they would receive compensation equivalent to half a month's salary.
The second option allowed them to remain on the company payroll. However, they would be reassigned to lower-paid roles on the assembly line. This was despite the graduates having been originally recruited for research and development, engineering, or management trainee positions.
Official data from the Changzhou Municipal Human Resources and Social Security Bureau provides scale to the event. Xingyu had hired a total of 440 fresh graduates this cycle. The bureau confirmed the company reached negotiated terminations with 107 of them.
Company Profile and Client Base
Changzhou Xingyu Automotive Lighting System is China's largest manufacturer of automotive lighting components by revenue. It is based in Jiangsu province. The company's official website lists a roster of prominent automotive clients, including Volkswagen, BMW, and BYD.
This client list is central to the scrutiny now faced by the supplier. Volkswagen's decision to launch an inquiry directly links the supplier's internal labour practices to its relationships with major international automakers.
The lay-offs have transcended a local labour dispute to become a national talking point. Public outrage has focused on the treatment of young graduates entering the workforce. The swift reversal of career promises has struck a chord.
Volkswagen's investigation will examine the circumstances and compliance of the supplier's actions. The outcome could influence how global brands assess and manage their supply chain partners in China. For now, the incident remains a stark example of volatile employment conditions in a shifting economic landscape.
