The Aditya Birla Group has launched a new wires and cables business, Ultravolt, backed by an Rs 1,800 crore investment

The Aditya Birla Group announced the launch of its wires and cables business, Ultravolt, on Thursday. The venture is backed by an investment of Rs 1,800 crore and will be the second-largest player in the wires segment by capacity at launch, according to the group.

Housed under flagship firm UltraTech Cement, Ultravolt aims to build a scaled national brand. The group stated the goal is to become one of the top two players in the market within five years.

Expansion of the Building Solutions Strategy

UltraTech's entry into wires and cables extends its participation in the construction value chain. It moves the company beyond grey cement, ready-mix concrete, building products, and white cement. The group noted this aligns with its stated building solutions strategy and enables deeper participation in opportunities around homebuilding, infrastructure, and electrification.

Group chairman Kumar Mangalam Birla said wires and cables are central to India's next phase of development. He cited their position at the intersection of urbanisation, electrification, and digitisation. "More than 100 million new homes over the next decade, expanding energy infrastructure, and the rapid rise of data centres are poised to fuel a boom in the category," Birla stated.

A Pattern of New Business Launches

Ultravolt marks the group's fourth new business foray in three years. This follows launches in paints (Birla Opus), B2B e-commerce (Birla Pivot), and jewellery retail (Indriya). Actor Shah Rukh Khan has been signed as the brand ambassador for the jewellery venture.

Birla said the group's expansion is driven by strong structural tailwinds supporting long-term category growth. He also cited the opportunity to disrupt markets by use the group's brand, capital, scale, and ecosystem insights. The wires and cables market meets these criteria, being a well-established category with clear growth drivers.

Retail and Distribution Ambitions

Ultravolt Director Dilip Gaur outlined ambitious distribution plans. The business is launching on a pan-Indian scale rather than testing regions sequentially. "Our plan is to reach more than one lakh retailers and further activate availability through over 5,000 UltraTech Building Solutions (UBS) outlets," Gaur said.

The initial rollout will cover more than 500 districts and 6,000 pin codes. At launch, Ultravolt will offer a comprehensive portfolio of wires, cables, and conduits. Plans include progressive expansion across the full kilovolt spectrum, specialty cable applications, and a broader range of electrical accessories.

CEO Sriram Rangarajan said the launch portfolio includes home wires, flexible wires, and cables for residential, commercial, industrial, and infrastructure applications. The business is anchored by a new manufacturing facility in Jhagadia, Gujarat. This plant has an installed capacity of 10,98,000 kilometres and began commercial production on September 1, 2026.

Birla said Ultravolt would seek differentiation beyond pricing. The focus will be on product quality, technology, availability, and customer service. He described successful new business creation as a core part of the group's DNA and an important source of differentiation.
