Tata 1mg Expands 30-Minute Medicine Delivery to 10 Cities
Tata 1mg has launched a 30-minute medicine delivery service, now live in 10 cities including new expansions in New Delhi and Mumbai.

Tata 1mg is scaling its 30-minute medicine delivery service across 10 Indian cities. The service, which began as a pilot in Gurugram in 2024, is now focusing on deeper expansion in New Delhi and Mumbai this year.
This quick-commerce model for pharmaceuticals is built on a foundation of regulatory compliance and hyper-local operations. It represents a specialized segment of retail logistics where speed cannot compromise patient safety.
Operational Model and Compliance
The medicine delivery model operates under a zero-tolerance margin for error. Every node in the supply chain that processes medicines must hold a valid drug license. Dispensing is handled exclusively by certified pharmacists to ensure the correct prescribed medicine is delivered, a critical difference from generic grocery pickers.
Temperature control is non-negotiable. Medicines requiring cold chain storage must be kept in dedicated, temperature-controlled enclosures between 2 and 8 degrees Celsius throughout the entire delivery journey. This involves refrigerated storage, insulated transit boxes, and continuous monitoring to prevent potency loss. Also, a valid prescription is mandatory for all prescription-only medicines before any dispensing occurs.
Inventory and Fulfillment Network
Tata 1mg's fulfillment is powered by a network of its own retail stores, which double as delivery centers. The company currently operates approximately 350 such stores and plans to expand this footprint to around 500 locations by the end of the year. This hybrid model also incorporates dedicated dark stores, warehouses, and partnerships for dark-store space in select locations.
Managing inventory for this service is complex. The full catalogue spans hundreds of thousands of SKUs across prescription drugs, over-the-counter products, and wellness items. Demand is spread across a long tail due to patient loyalty to specific brands and dosages. Missing a particular SKU variant means a lost order.
To solve this, the company uses a proprietary inventory engine. It creates bespoke stock profiles for each local catchment based on live data like searches, clicks, and orders by pin code. The system improves as the network grows, creating a feedback loop of better local demand intelligence.
Market Position and Competitive Edge
The company's approach creates significant barriers for horizontal quick-commerce players. Structural differences make pharmacy delivery more expensive and complex to set up than grocery delivery. Key differentiators include the prescription requirement, mandatory pharmacist dispensing, and building-level compliance needs. Riders are specifically trained to treat medicine parcels with a heightened duty of care.
Tata 1mg leverages over a decade of operational data to inform its hyper-local inventory decisions. The service model is density-led, with delivery promises varying by catchment area. While 30-minute delivery is targeted in dense urban zones, the company offers same-day or next-day delivery in tier-2 and tier-3 cities, with faster-than-standard service already live in nine such locations.
The service progression typically moves from multi-day waits to same-day, then to multi-hour, one-hour, and finally 30-minute delivery as local network strength increases. The company balances service quality and cost by targeting a 30-to-35 minute operating band. It expects to operate several hundred stores across India within the next three to five years, with each new store expanding the zone of reliable hour-and-under medicine delivery. The immediate focus is on reaching 500 fulfillment locations by year-end to deepen service penetration in New Delhi and Mumbai.
