Neville Tata's SDTT appointment faces legal challenge over governance
Noel and Neville Tata filed precautionary legal caveats on October 7, 2026, after fellow trustees of the Sir Dorabji Tata Trust raised governance concerns.

Noel Tata and his son Neville Tata filed precautionary legal caveats on October 7, 2026. The filings were made in the Bombay High Court and Mumbai City Civil Court against fellow trustees of the Sir Dorabji Tata Trust (SDTT). A caveat is a precautionary filing under Section 148A of the Code of Civil Procedure. It seeks an opportunity to be heard before any court order is passed. The caveat remains in force for 90 days from its filing date.
These four trustees are the remaining members of SDTT's six-member board. If any named trustee seeks relief against Noel or Neville Tata, the court must first hear the caveators. The applicant must provide the caveators with a copy of any application. Tata Trusts and Noel Tata had earlier filed similar caveats before the Charity Commissioner.
Governance concerns raised by fellow trustees
Trustees Venu Srinivasan and Vijay Singh filed formal complaints on September 25, 2026. The Maharashtra Charity Commissioner has given SDTT until October 19, 2026, to respond. The trust's earlier deadline was October 12.
Srinivasan has sought an inquiry into SDTT's administration and governance. He questions its involvement in the affairs of Tata Sons. His objections concern Noel Tata's position as a perpetual trustee and Tata Trusts chairman. Srinivasan also questions the basis for Neville Tata's induction into SDTT. He has asked the commissioner to freeze the composition of the SDTT board while an inquiry is pending. Depending on the findings, he wants action that could include suspending or removing trustees.
Vijay Singh has raised similar concerns about SDTT's governance. He has argued that SDTT's large shareholding in Tata Sons should not lead the trust to act as a commercial enterprise. In a letter dated October 5, 2026, the four other SDTT trustees dismissed these concerns.
Neville Tata's retail leadership background
Neville Tata is part of the Tata family's third generation. He studied business management at Bayes Business School in London and completed an MBA from INSEAD in Singapore. He started working within the Tata Group in 2016. His first assignment was in Trent's packaged foods and beverages division. Trent is the retail business founded by Simone Tata.
Neville Tata later headed operations at Zudio, Trent's affordable fashion brand. During his leadership, Zudio expanded to hundreds of stores across urban centres. The brand contributed roughly half of Trent's total sales. He was subsequently given responsibility for Star Bazaar, Trent's hypermarket partnership with Tesco. His work there focused on changing operations and integrating the business's own-label offerings.
SDTT's influence and broader context
SDTT holds about 28% of Tata Sons and is its largest shareholder. The dispute brings attention to leadership succession and the Tata family's generational transition. The complaints followed a Tata Sons board meeting on September 17, 2026. At that meeting, the board passed a resolution backing N Chandrasekaran for a third term as chairman. Noel Tata has opposed this reappointment.
This is not an isolated governance issue. In April 2026, a complaint was filed over the composition of the Sir Ratan Tata Trust board. In May 2026, the commissioner directed that trust to postpone a board meeting. It was told not to hold further meetings until an inspector's report was submitted.
Current status and next steps
These matters remain under review by regulatory authorities and legal forums. They also raise questions about Neville Tata's appointment to SDTT. The Maharashtra Charity Commissioner has directed SDTT to respond to the complaints filed by Srinivasan and Singh by October 19, 2026.
