Colgate May Hike Prices Amid Inflation Concerns

Colgate-Palmolive India has signaled that it may take further price hikes in the coming quarters to protect its margins as the company continues to face commodity inflation triggered by the West Asia war.
The company's CEO and MD, Prabha Narasimhan, stated that inflation will be an issue for the company, but it has taken steps to shield the most vulnerable consumer cohorts against price hikes. This includes increasing grammage in small packs last year to pass on GST cut benefits. The Rs 10 and 20 packs offer "fantastic value" to consumers, according to Narasimhan.
The company has kept the grammage additions intact and has taken low single-digit pricing in the recent past. However, it may not be enough to protect its margins, and further price hikes may be necessary.
Colgate-Palmolive is doubling down on premiumisation to boost sales and will not shy away from driving growth ahead of profitability. The premium business is growing six times that of the market, according to Narasimhan. "There is an opportunity to drive premiumisation in both toothpaste and toothbrush," he said.
The company is also stepping up its core brands in terms of packaging and product experience. Increasing availability of products, rising affluence, and exposure to oral health awareness are helping the firm gain volumes in rural markets, Narasimhan said.
However, the company did not comment on the rural outlook amid a deficit in monsoon rains. Narasimhan also stated that the company is disappointed with the growth of its personal care brand Palmolive and has partnered with Bombay Shaving Company to manage the business for D2C and e-commerce channels.

The company's focus on premiumisation and its efforts to protect its margins through price hikes and grammage additions will be closely watched by investors and consumers alike. As the company continues to navigate the challenges of commodity inflation, it will be interesting to see how it balances its growth ambitions with the need to protect its margins.
