## Politics first, property later Pirojsha Godrej, the youngest son of Adi and Parmeshwar Godrej, has taken a winding path to become the Chairperson-designate of Godrej Industries Group. After graduating in economics from the Wharton School, Godrej pursued a master's in international affairs at Columbia and an MBA at Columbia Business School. However, in his younger years, he appeared more interested in public life than corporate life, interning at Hillary Clinton's US Senate office in 2002 and with India's external affairs ministry. In 2005, it was reported that Godrej had even contemplated running for public office two decades later. Instead, he returned to the family business in 2004 and chose Godrej Properties, which was then a relatively small operation with considerable room to grow. By 31, he was its MD and CEO, the first among the then-younger generation of Godrejs to take P&L responsibility for a listed group company. ## The builder builds his own track Under Godrej's leadership, Godrej Properties went through a period of rapid expansion and became India's largest real estate developer by residential sales in FY21, a position it continues to hold, according to the company. He also founded Godrej Capital and Godrej Ventures. Godrej's interests have always extended beyond spreadsheets, and he enjoys the creative side of physical structures. His off-hours include jet skiing, travel, and collecting rare books, manuscripts, and memorabilia, including letters written by Mahatma Gandhi. The family setting is equally central to Godrej's story. His elder sisters Tanya Dubash and Nisaba Godrej have also held senior roles in the group. His wife, Karla Bookman, founded the parenting platform TheSwaddle. Godrej's rise has therefore been neither sudden nor entirely ceremonial. He has spent more than two decades inside the group, moving from the family's real estate arm to building new businesses and eventually becoming one of the principal architects of the next phase of the family enterprise. ## From family name to personal imprint That phase formally took shape after the Godrej family split its business interests in 2024. Godrej emerged as the leader of Godrej Industries Group, while Jamshyd Godrej and Nyrika Holkar took charge of Godrej Enterprises Group. Today, Godrej puts the combined value of GIG's six businesses at about ₹2 lakh crore and wants to take it to ₹5 lakh crore in five years. However, his language around the job is less about inheritance than stewardship. "My transition to group chairperson has been gradual rather than a move from one role to another. But formally taking on the role brings a stronger sense of stewardship. You have to think quite deeply about how you make sure you leave the Group stronger than when you found it," Godrej told ET's Kala Vijayraghavan in an exclusive interview. Godrej also believes the group may have been too cautious with capital and too willing to spread itself across businesses without giving each enough scale. His answer is not growth at any cost: stronger businesses, sharper accountability, and leaders capable of turning opportunity into execution. That may be the most interesting evolution in Godrej's journey.
