Yum China Expands Burger Presence with 300th Pizza Hut Burger Bar
Yum China opens 300th Pizza Hut Burger Bar, ramping up its push into China's fast-growing burger market

Yum China has marked a significant milestone in its expansion into China's burger market with the opening of its 300th Pizza Hut Burger Bar. This move is part of the company's strategy to tap into the country's increasingly competitive burger sector.
Expansion Strategy
The Pizza Hut Burger Bar concept was launched less than a year ago, and it has already shown promising results. According to Jeff Kuai, GM of Pizza Hut China, the company entered the burger category two years ago with Pizza Dough Burgers, which received a positive response from consumers. The Burger Bar format is now taking the business to the next level, with a focus on refining the module to meet the diverse needs of consumers.
The Burger Bar format operates alongside existing Pizza Hut restaurants, sharing staff and resources while requiring relatively low investment. This approach allows for efficient use of resources and enables the company to expand quickly. The menu features burgers made with freshly baked pizza dough buns and patties cooked on a hot griddle in an open kitchen, offering a unique twist on traditional burgers.
Market Outlook
The expansion of Pizza Hut Burger Bar comes as the burger market in China is experiencing rapid growth. According to Emergen Research data, China's burger market was valued at an estimated US$18.4 billion in 2025 and is projected to grow at an annual rate of 8.7 per cent through 2035. This growth is driven by factors such as budget-conscious consumers, smaller households, and rising demand for convenient individual meals.
Sales Projections
Pizza Hut's broader burger business, including sales from its existing restaurants and Burger Bar outlets, is expected to generate more than RMB1 billion (US$148.6 million) this year. This accounts for around 5 per cent to 6 per cent of Pizza Hut China's sales. The company is looking to accelerate its expansion, targeting more than 800 net new store openings in each of 2027 and 2028, up from its previous target of more than 600.
The 300th Pizza Hut Burger Bar location, opened in Wuhan, Hubei province, introduced a limited-edition Crayfish Crispy Lotus Root Cheeseburger inspired by local flavours. This move highlights the company's efforts to cater to diverse consumer needs and preferences. With its expanding presence in the burger market, Yum China is well-positioned to capitalize on the growing demand for convenient and unique dining experiences in China.
