Reliance Consumer Products, part of billionaire Mukesh Ambani's empire, launched its Bombay Creamery ice cream brand on Tuesday. The new line includes products priced as low as 10 rupees, or 10.53 cents, as the conglomerate enters India's competitive packaged goods market.

This move follows Reliance's disruptive history in telecoms and its recent relaunch of the Campa soft drink brand. The company's consumer goods arm stated that Bombay Creamery will offer cones, cups, tubs, bars, and sticks. Initial availability is in western India, with a nationwide rollout planned soon.

A crowded market landscape

The Indian ice cream market features several major established brands. These include Amul, Vadilal, Mother Dairy, Kwality Wall's, and Hatsun Agro's Arun. Global names like Magnum and Baskin-Robbins also compete in the space.

A price check by Reuters on a grocery delivery app found Amul's mango-flavoured ice cream stick to be the cheapest among rivals at 20 rupees. This places Reliance's entry-level product at half that price point.

Strategy and competitive advantage

Analysts point to Reliance's integrated approach as a key differentiator. "The real competitive advantage will come from Reliance's ability to combine pricing, retail reach, distribution ... and data," said A. Manikandan, CEO of Tiger Consulting. He added that the low price could encourage trial purchases.

The company's success may hinge on converting first-time buyers into loyal customers. Manikandan suggested that significant pressure could be placed on national and regional rivals if Reliance expands its freezer network across markets.

Ice cream brands commonly supply freezers to retailers to ensure product visibility. Reliance has already deployed fridges bearing the Campa logo in stores as part of its broader consumer goods expansion.

The long-term retail play

Industry observers see the launch as a strategic move to build a comprehensive consumer ecosystem. Deven Choksey, managing director of DRChoksey FinServ, commented on the long-game strategy. "With a complete ecosystem in place, they can ... capture wallet share across the products consumers buy," he said.

This entry into ice cream represents another front in Reliance's deepening push into fast-moving consumer goods, leveraging its vast retail and distribution infrastructure.
