Hyundai Motor India has officially inaugurated its Pune manufacturing plant with an additional ₹4,000 crore investment planned by 2030. The facility, which started with an initial annual capacity of 1.7 lakh units and an initial investment of ₹7,000 crore, was launched by Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Deputy Chief Minister Sunetra Pawar, Transport Minister Uday Samant, and senior Hyundai executives.

Capacity expansion and production plans

Hyundai aims to nearly double the Pune plant’s annual capacity to 3.2 lakh units in a phased expansion. This increase of 1.5 lakh units represents growth of around 88 percent over the initial scale. The plant is equipped with flexible production systems capable of supporting multiple models, including future internal combustion engine and hybrid vehicle manufacturing. The site also houses an engine shop with a capacity to produce 150,000 engines annually.

Combined with its Chennai operations, Hyundai Motor India's total manufacturing capacity will reach nearly 11.4 lakh units a year by 2030.

Export milestone and market significance

The plant inauguration coincided with Hyundai Motor India crossing a significant export milestone. The company has become the first automobile manufacturer in India to achieve 4 million cumulative passenger vehicle exports since 1999. In the last fiscal year, the company exported 1,90,125 vehicles. Hyundai Motor Group Executive Chair Euisun Chung highlighted the achievement's importance. He stated, "HMIL’s milestone of 4 million cumulative vehicle exports demonstrates the global competitiveness of Indian manufacturing."

Pune’s proximity to Mumbai Port is expected to further support export logistics.

Broader investment and ecosystem impact

The Pune expansion is a key component of Hyundai Motor Group's $15.5 billion investment strategy for India through 2032. CEO Tarun Garg confirmed that ₹4,000 crore of this broader investment would be directed towards Maharashtra. A strong regional supplier ecosystem underpins this vision. Fifty-five supplier partners have already invested nearly ₹4,600 crore in the state, and together with tier-II vendors, this network has created more than 18,000 jobs in Maharashtra.

The company is actively building a regional supplier base around the Talegaon plant location, with nearly half of the sourcing network within a 50-kilometre radius. Hyundai aims to significantly raise its level of localisation from 83% to 92%.

The plant itself integrates Industry 4.0 technologies, utilising Hyundai's E-FOREST digital manufacturing platform. This system includes artificial intelligence-enabled quality inspection, predictive maintenance, digital simulations, and augmented-reality training for workers.

Leadership commentary and future outlook

Leadership emphasised India's continued strategic importance. Beyond manufacturing, the company stated a commitment to contributing to India's future through innovation, research, electrification, and talent development. Hyundai plans to introduce four electric vehicles by 2029 and invest in charging infrastructure, while also committing to hybrid technology. The goal is to make 50 percent of its portfolio sustainable by 2030.

The company is localising the entire supply chain within battery packs, and power electronics are already being localised. Hyundai has sold nearly 10 million passenger vehicles in the domestic market over its 30-year presence in India, though it recently slipped to fourth place in passenger vehicle sales after holding the second position for years.

Financial results for the quarter ended June 2026 showed net sales of Rs 16,334.63 crore, broadly flat year-on-year. Profit after tax declined 35.1 percent to Rs 888.62 crore. Operating margin, excluding other income, fell to 9.25 percent from 13.31 percent a year earlier amid supplier disruption, lower exports, and commodity-cost pressure. Management indicated that higher utilisation of the Pune plant, new model launches, and export recovery could support performance in the second half of the fiscal year.

The All New Hyundai VENUE will be produced exclusively at the Pune plant, with plans to expand its exports to more than 35 countries. Tarun Garg outlined the product offensive tied to the new capacity. "We are going to launch 26 new models to marry this capacity so that we can get back the market share as well," he said.
