Flipkart has entered the microdrama segment. The ecommerce giant has placed the new feature within its main app to attract users and boost engagement ahead of the festive season.

The vertical is located inside a section called 'Play'. This section also houses 'Explore', a content-led shopping discovery platform. The new 'Drama' feed is currently populated with series from media company Terribly Tiny Tales and from Double Tap Films, which is Pratilipi's microdrama studio. Flipkart formed the partnership with Tencent-backed Pratilipi and Terribly Tiny Tales, people familiar with the matter told the Economic Times.

Flipkart did not respond to queries from the Economic Times. This move follows the company's acquisition of a majority stake in digital content platform Pinkvilla last September. The Walmart-backed firm has been aggressively pursuing content commerce strategies aimed at engaging Gen Z shoppers.

A crowded competitive landscape

The microdrama sector is already packed with dedicated platforms. These include Krafton and 3one4 Capital-backed Kuku Technologies’ Kuku TV, Eloelo’s Story TV, ShareChat’s Quick TV, and Dashverse’s DashReels.

Investor caution and monetisation challenges

Investor caution surrounds the format. Many content-led businesses in this space have yet to prove they can achieve durable monetisation and long-term user retention.

Industry moves and strategic bets

In June, audio startup Pocket FM shut down its microdrama vertical, Pocket TV. Commenting on the decision, Pocket FM's cofounder and CEO Rohan Nayak said user acquisition is not the primary challenge. "Long-term retention is," he stated in a LinkedIn post. Nayak criticized the competitive tactics used by some. "Much of the category today is being supported by aggressive user acquisition budgets, dark patterns and auto-renewal mechanics; that's not a game we are interested in playing."

Despite these challenges, other players are expanding. Both Kuku Technologies and Mohalla Tech, the parent company of ShareChat and Moj, are doubling down on the microdrama format. Kuku Technologies took a significant step in June by confidentially filing draft papers with market regulator Sebi for an initial public offering worth Rs 3,500 crore.
